Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: What Landlords and Property Managers Actually Check
TidyMamas Β· October 28, 2026

Moving Out? Your Deposit May Depend on This Checklist
If you are searching for a move out cleaning checklist, you want one simple answer: what will your landlord actually look at before returning your deposit or signing off on the home? The short answer is β everything that is empty and visible. When furniture and rugs are gone, dust on baseboards, grease inside the oven, rings in the tub, and crumbs inside cabinets are impossible to hide. Landlords and property managers walk through with a checklist, good lighting, and a camera. This guide follows the same room-by-room checklist and explains the spots renters and sellers miss most.
TidyMamas is a family-run Cleveland cleaning company. Our Move In / Move Out Clean starts from $250, covers every room in the empty home, and is priced flat-rate β the quoted price is final, with no tax added and no hidden fees. See our pricing or book online.
Why a Move-Out Clean Is Different From a Regular Clean
A Standard Clean maintains a home that is lived in and cleaned regularly. A Deep Clean resets a lived-in home top to bottom. A move-out clean is more demanding than both, for three reasons.
The home is empty. There is nowhere for dust, hair, or scuffs to hide, so every wall, corner, and appliance interior gets inspected.
The standard is "ready for the next person." The next tenant or buyer expects to put food in the cabinets on day one β not clean someone else's splatter first.
The result is documented. Many landlords compare move-out condition against move-in photos. Grease and soap scum that built up over years become your responsibility at the worst possible time β moving week.
That is why Move In / Move Out cleaning is never discounted, and why it covers inside cabinets, drawers, and appliances.
The Kitchen: Where Most Deposits Are Lost
Property managers almost always start in the kitchen, because it takes the hardest use and the longest to restore.
Appliances, inside and out. Clean inside the oven, including glass and racks, and inside the refrigerator after it is emptied. Wipe the microwave inside and out, clean the dishwasher filter and edges, and degrease the stovetop, burners, and range hood.
Cabinets and drawers. Empty, vacuum out crumbs, then wipe every interior shelf and drawer. Checkers open them β sticky rings and crumbs are an instant fail.
Counters, sink, and backsplash. Degrease counters and backsplash, polish the sink and faucet, and remove hard-water buildup around the tap, common in Cleveland-area homes.
Floors and details. Wipe cabinet fronts, clean baseboards, and mop your way out last so no footprints remain.
Bathrooms: The Second Inspection Hot Spot
Tub, shower, and toilet. Scrub soap scum from tub and shower walls, clean grout lines, polish glass and fixtures, and clean the toilet inside, outside, and around the base β including behind it, a spot checkers look for specifically.
Mirror, vanity, and cabinets. Clean the mirror without streaks, wipe inside the medicine cabinet and vanity drawers, and remove hair from every corner β hair left behind is a common reason bathrooms fail inspection.
Floors and exhaust fan. Mop into the corners, wipe baseboards, and dust the exhaust fan cover, which signals a rushed job if missed.
Bedrooms and Living Areas
Closets. Vacuum closet floors, wipe shelves, and remove hooks, nails, and adhesive strips if your lease requires it.
Walls and touch points. Spot-clean scuffs and fingerprints around light switches, door handles, and railings. Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, vents, and window blinds β blinds are included in a Move In / Move Out Clean, while they are an add-on for Standard and Deep cleans.
Windows and glass. Clean interior windows and glass doors, and wipe tracks and sills, including sliding-door tracks, which collect a surprising amount of grit.
Floors throughout. Vacuum carpet edges and corners where dust lines form, and mop hard floors room by room. For hardwood, use a cleaner made for wood and never leave standing water.
The Most-Missed Spots on Every Move-Out Checklist
- **Inside the oven, fridge, and dishwasher** β checkers open every appliance
- **Top of the refrigerator and upper cabinet shelves**
- **Baseboards and door frames** throughout the home
- **Inside every cabinet and drawer**, not just the kitchen
- **Light fixtures, ceiling fans, and air vents**
- **Garage and basement floors** β sweep them out; leave no items or trash behind
- **Trash and recycling bins** β empty and wipe them, and leave no bags behind
A good rule: open every door, drawer, and appliance once more after you think you are done. If you find something, the manager would have too.
What to Do Before the Cleaning Starts
Finish moving first. A move-out clean only works in an empty home. Boxes left behind mean surfaces that cannot be reached β and cannot pass inspection.
Keep the utilities on. Cleaners need water, power, and light through the final walk-through. Schedule shutoff for after the clean.
Handle repairs separately. Cleaning does not include patching holes, painting, or repairs. If your lease requires them, finish them before the clean so repair dust does not undo it.
Use products safely. Read labels, work one product at a time, and never mix cleaning chemicals β especially never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia. Ventilate the room; when in doubt, hot water and a microfiber cloth handle more than most people expect.
How Much Does Move-Out Cleaning Cost in Cleveland?
At TidyMamas, a Move In / Move Out Clean starts from $250 for smaller homes. Your exact flat-rate price depends on the home's size β bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage β and its condition. The price quoted is the price you pay: no tax added, no hidden fees, and no hourly clock. Compare services on our pricing page, read questions on our FAQ page, and see how our satisfaction guarantee backs every clean.
Moving into a new place nearby? The same service works in reverse β a move-in clean before furniture arrives means you unpack into cabinets and bathrooms that are already clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is move-out cleaning different from deep cleaning? A deep clean resets a home you still live in. A move-out clean is done empty and adds the interiors landlords inspect: inside cabinets, drawers, and appliances, plus closets and baseboards. See our Move In / Move Out service page for details.
When should I schedule the move-out clean? After the home is empty and repairs are finished, but before your final walk-through or key handover. Book a few days ahead at busy month-end.
Which areas do you serve? We serve Cleveland, Lakewood, Rocky River, Westlake, Bay Village, Fairview Park, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, Avon, Avon Lake, Strongsville, Parma, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and Elyria. See the full list on our service area page.
Can I just book a standard clean instead? A Standard Clean starts from $120 and a Deep Clean from $185, but neither is designed for an empty-home inspection. If a deposit or closing depends on the result, choose Move In / Move Out.
What if something is not right after the clean? Tell us. We check our work as we go, walk through before we leave, and every clean is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
Leave the Home Ready for Its Next Chapter
A move is stressful enough without spending your last day scrubbing an oven. Work the checklist room by room, and leave the home the way you would want to find it.
