Cleveland winters hit hard. From November through March, Northeast Ohio homes take a beating โ and by the time spring finally shows up, your home has accumulated a very specific kind of grime that other parts of the country don't have to deal with. Road salt. Basement condensation. Window film from months of storm glass. Forced-air heating residue coating every surface.
This spring cleaning guide is written for Cleveland homes specifically โ not generic internet advice written by someone who's never seen a Lake Erie winter. Here's what actually matters.
"By April, Cleveland homes have typically accumulated 4โ5 months of closed-window living. Spring cleaning isn't optional โ it's damage control."
1. Start with the Entry Hall & Garage (Salt Damage)
This is the most Cleveland-specific task on this list. The salt used on Northeast Ohio roads from October through March tracks into your home constantly. By spring, your entryway floor, baseboards, and garage floor have visible white residue that, if left, etches into hard flooring and corrodes metal surfaces.
- Entry hall floors: Mop with a mild acid solution (white vinegar diluted in water works well) to neutralize salt residue. Don't use straight vinegar on stone or marble.
- Entry baseboards: Wipe with a damp cloth โ you'll see the white residue come off immediately.
- Garage floor: Sweep thoroughly, then rinse or pressure wash if possible. Salt residue left on concrete accelerates cracking.
- Door mats: Replace or deep-clean winter door mats โ they're saturated with salt at this point.
2. Address Basement Moisture
Cleveland's freeze-thaw cycle puts serious pressure on basement walls and foundations. As ground thaws in spring, moisture often finds its way in. Before you do anything else in your basement:
- Run your dehumidifier โ aim for 50% humidity or lower
- Check window wells for debris and standing water
- Look for new water stains on basement walls (white mineral deposits = past moisture intrusion)
- Clean out basement floor drains โ these get clogged over winter
- If you smell mildew, that's a red flag โ investigate before just masking it
3. Clean Windows Inside and Out
After months of storm windows, central heating, and condensation, your windows have a visible film on both sides. Spring is the time to clean them properly โ before pollen season kicks in and coats them again.
- Clean window frames and sills โ dust and condensation debris accumulate in the corners
- Wipe window tracks with a damp Q-tip or toothbrush
- Clean glass with glass cleaner or a vinegar-water solution and microfiber cloth
- Check caulking around window frames โ cracked caulk lets in moisture and cold air
4. HVAC & Air Quality Reset
Cleveland homes run forced-air heating for months. By spring, your ducts, filters, and vents have accumulated a season's worth of dust. Poor air quality in your home affects your health and makes allergies worse during pollen season.
๐ฌ๏ธ Spring HVAC Checklist
- Replace furnace/HVAC filter (do this now if you haven't since fall)
- Vacuum all return air vents and registers
- Schedule AC tune-up before summer heat hits (Cleveland AC service books up fast in May)
- Clean bathroom exhaust fans โ these run all winter and accumulate significant lint/dust
- Check dryer vent for lint buildup โ a fire hazard, and spring is the right time
5. Whole-Home Deep Clean (the Big One)
Spring is the ideal time for a proper whole-home deep clean. All the small things you've been avoiding since fall accumulate into one big job. The areas that need the most attention after a Cleveland winter:
Kitchen
- Deep clean oven โ winter comfort food cooking leaves serious residue
- Clean refrigerator coils if accessible (improves efficiency for summer)
- Wipe down all cabinet fronts โ cooking grease builds up over winter
- Check pantry for expired items and wipe shelves
Bedrooms
- Wash comforters, duvet covers, and pillows (most people avoid this all winter)
- Rotate or flip mattresses
- Vacuum under beds โ dust bunnies multiply in winter when windows are closed
- Wipe ceiling fans โ they reverse direction in winter and accumulate dust on top of blades
Living Areas
- Vacuum upholstered furniture including under cushions
- Wash throw pillows and blankets
- Clean baseboards throughout the home (heat rises along baseboards all winter, collecting dust)
- Wipe down all light switches and door handles โ high-touch surfaces from months of indoor living
6. Declutter & Donate (The Rule of One Season)
Spring is the best time to evaluate what you actually use. A useful rule: if you didn't touch something between October and March, you don't need it. Go through:
- Coat closet (donate coats that didn't get worn this winter)
- Kids' clothing (size up if needed)
- Kitchen gadgets (the appliances still in the box since last year)
- Garage tools and gear
