How to Clean Windows Before Winter in Cleveland

October is a practical time to clean the inside of your windows, wipe down sills and tackle dusty tracks before colder weather arrives. With windows staying closed more often, fingerprints, pet nose prints and summer dust can become especially noticeable in the lower autumn light.

For Cleveland and Northeast Ohio homeowners, a fall window-cleaning routine also offers a chance to spot moisture problems before winter. Here’s how to get clearer glass without streaks, damaged finishes or unnecessary scrubbing.

What Should You Use to Clean Windows?

Start with a vacuum with a brush attachment, several clean microfiber cloths and a glass cleaner approved for your windows. Check manufacturer instructions first if you have tinted glass, specialty coatings or protective film.

Avoid abrasive pads and scraping with razor blades, which can damage some window surfaces. Never mix cleaning products.

For painted frames and sills, a lightly damp cloth with mild dish soap is often enough, provided the finish allows it. Follow with a separate damp cloth to remove residue, then dry promptly. Don’t saturate woodwork or let water collect in corners.

What Order Should You Clean Windows In?

Work from the top down, and remove loose dirt before adding moisture. Otherwise, dust in the tracks turns into muddy residue.

First, dust blinds or nearby shades according to their care instructions. Vacuum the frame, sill and accessible tracks, using gentle pressure around seals and weatherstripping. Loosen stubborn debris with a soft brush, then vacuum again.

Next, wipe frames and sills. Clean the glass last so falling dust doesn’t undo your work.

For removable screens, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Gently vacuum with a brush attachment, or wash compatible screens with mild soapy water. Rinse and let them dry completely before reinstalling. Don’t force stuck screens or lean outside to reach them.

How Do You Prevent Streaks on Window Glass?

Choose a cloudy October day or clean when direct sunlight isn’t hitting the window. Sunlight can dry cleaner before you have time to wipe it away.

Apply a small amount of cleaner to your cloth rather than soaking the glass. Wipe methodically from top to bottom, then use a second dry microfiber cloth to buff away remaining moisture.

If streaks persist, switch to a fresh cloth. A dirty cloth or excess product often leaves the haze you’re trying to remove. Use separate cloths for grimy tracks and glass.

Is Cloudy Glass Actually a Cleaning Problem?

Not always. If haze appears trapped between panes and neither surface wipes clear, it may indicate a window seal issue rather than dirt.

Recurring indoor condensation deserves attention, too. Dry wet sills promptly and investigate persistent moisture instead of repeatedly cleaning around it. Window cleaning cannot fix leaks or excessive indoor humidity.

Keep exterior work limited to safely accessible areas; hire an appropriate professional for elevated windows.
